The process

Six stages, and what happens in each

A hypnotherapy programme is not a single dramatic event. It is a sequence — mostly unglamorous, largely conversational, and built so that each stage only makes sense once the previous one has actually been done.

Before anything else, the whole picture

Understand

The first session is almost entirely conversation, and it is longer than the rest. We cover your history with weight and eating, what you have already tried and what happened, your typical day, sleep, work pressure, who you eat with, and what you would actually like to be different — which is often more specific and more modest than “lose weight”.

This stage also covers medical context. If there is an underlying condition, medication affecting appetite, or a history of disordered eating, that changes what is appropriate. Occasionally it means the honest recommendation is to see a doctor, dietitian or psychological service first — and if so, you will be told.

Finding the cue, not just the calories

Identify

Eating patterns are made of three parts: the cue that starts them, the routine that follows, and the payoff that makes the sequence worth repeating. Most approaches attack only the middle. Here we spend real effort on the first and third, because they are what make the second automatic.

The work is to get uncomfortably specific. Not “I snack too much” but the exact time, place, preceding event, physical state and feeling. Vague patterns cannot be intervened on. Precise ones frequently suggest their own solution before any hypnosis is involved at all.

Focused attention, deliberately unremarkable

Relax

You sit in a comfortable chair, usually with your eyes closed, and are talked through slowing your breathing and releasing physical tension. It takes a few minutes and feels, for most people, like the most rest they have had in a while.

You remain awake and aware throughout. You will hear everything, remember the session, and can speak, move or stop at any point. Nothing is administered and no control is surrendered — the state is one you enter, with guidance, rather than one imposed on you. People who arrive expecting drama tend to be slightly disappointed, which is a good sign.

Rehearsing a different response

Reframe

With attention focused and analytical interruption reduced, we work on the specific situation identified in stage two. This is largely mental rehearsal: imagining the cue arriving, and imagining responding differently — pausing, noticing, choosing, stopping when comfortably full — in enough sensory detail that it registers as something you have done rather than something you have been told.

Where food has been doing emotional work, this stage also explores what else could plausibly meet that need. The aim is not to remove a coping strategy and leave a gap, which rarely holds, but to make a second option genuinely available.

Making it survive an ordinary bad week

Reinforce

A response rehearsed once is fragile. Sessions repeat and vary the rehearsal so the new pattern strengthens, and extend it into the situations most likely to test it: tired evenings, social meals, celebrations, travel, and the stretch after something has gone wrong.

Between sessions you are usually asked to notice something specific rather than to follow rules. Noticing is where most of the useful information comes from, and it is also the part that quietly does the work — a pattern that is being observed is already less automatic than one that is not.

Adjusting honestly, including stopping

Reflect

Each subsequent session begins by reviewing what actually happened, in detail and without judgement. Where something did not work, that is information about the plan rather than a verdict on you — and it usually points at a cue we described imprecisely or a payoff we underestimated.

Progress is also framed deliberately. Weight is a slow, noisy and unreliable weekly signal; behavioural change shows up earlier and more clearly. Noticing before eating, recovering from a slip within a day rather than a fortnight, or a craving passing without action are all meaningful markers.

If, after a fair trial, hypnotherapy does not appear to be helping you, the right recommendation is to stop and consider something else. That conversation is part of the process, not a failure of it.

Practicalities

The ordinary logistics

The questions that are rarely on a therapy website and are almost always the ones people actually want answered.

Practical details about hypnotherapy sessions
Length of a session Typically 60–90 minutes. The first consultation runs longer because it is mostly conversation.
Number of sessions Varies with the pattern. A single, well-defined habit may need only a few; long-standing patterns tied to stress or emotional history usually need more. You will get an estimate at the first session rather than a package sold in advance.
Spacing Usually weekly or fortnightly at first, spacing out as changes hold. Enough time between sessions to have an ordinary week is part of the design.
In person or online Both. Online sessions work well for most weight-management goals, provided you have a private space, a stable connection and somewhere comfortable to sit undisturbed.
What to bring Nothing. Wear something comfortable. If you take medication or are under a doctor for anything relevant, it helps to mention it.
Confidentiality Sessions are private. Nothing is shared, quoted or published, and no session content is used as marketing material.
Stopping You may stop at any point, in a session or between them, without explanation.
Fees [SESSION FEES AND PACKAGE DETAILS TO BE PROVIDED]
Cancellation policy [CANCELLATION POLICY AND NOTICE PERIOD TO BE PROVIDED]

Measuring the right thing

Why the scale is a poor weekly report card

Body weight fluctuates day to day for reasons that have little to do with behaviour: hydration, salt, digestion, sleep, hormonal cycles and the timing of the last meal. Reading that noise as a verdict on the week is a reliable way to abandon an approach that was in fact working.

Behavioural markers move earlier and mean more. If the gap between a trigger and eating has lengthened, if a difficult evening no longer writes off the following three days, if a craving passed without action — those are the changes that precede and produce anything the scale will eventually show.

This is also why a responsible practice will not promise a number. The number is downstream of many factors, several of which sit entirely outside a therapy room.

It begins with a conversation

Nothing is decided in advance. The first consultation exists to understand your pattern and tell you honestly whether this is the right tool for it.
